Veg Caps

is this typical of an oranda or is mine just a pain?
my red cap oranda is now around 6-8 months old (i got him in october when he was about 1 inch) now hes about 2.5-3 inches and his wen is still not growing! he has a varied diet including veg and live blood worm (yuk! lol) but nothing seems to work? i had an aquarist come to look at him (he is a friend of my fiancees) and he said that i just had to wait as there were no reasons for it to not grow (water quality ect is all optimum)
has anyone tried anything that actually worked in getting the wen to grow? any advice would be great!
thanks x
There are 3 types of wen that an oranda can have. top, full and cap only At only 2 inches and 8 months old don't expect to see much. He is still a young fish. Wens will develope with age usually around 1 1/2 - 2 years of age.
What type they will get if any, will depend on basically genetics. Breeders that supply these fish are not from poor stock in fact they are the higher end just under the breeders and show fish.
There isn't much you can do to help with the wen growth. No special foods, no special lights, his wen is going to be what his genetics say it is going to be. Sorry.
The veggies daily mixed with high protein and fiber flakes or sinking pellets is a great diet with the addition of blood worms.
It is now a waiting game.
