Whats the difference between a strength muscle and an endurance muscle?
What is the physical difference between a muscle that is strong and a muscle that can go a long time? I dont get how a muscle can be made to do something a lot or to be strong. How does that work? Will an endurance muscle be as strong as a strength muscle the same size? If I start working endurance will my muscles shrink?
This may be an oversimplification but it gives you the general idea. Red muscle fibers(slow twitch) are best used for endurance. White twitch muscles (fast twitch) are best used for strength. All of your skeletal muscles have both, but the proportion of each is determined by genetics and also by how you've used your muscles in the past.
The difference between the two muscles fibers is in how they use energy. When you are doing lower intensity exercises for a longer period of time(jogging/low weights with lots of reps), you are using red muscles because your body can keep up with the amount of energy required and can supply enough oxygen). High intensity exercises present your body with a different challenge. If you are sprinting or lifting heavy weights, your body cannot get energy to its muscles nor get enough oxygen fast enough for what you are asking your body to do. So your body uses white muscles which burn ATP/CP and use lactic acid as the oxydizer.
So every muscle has both but if you work it aerobically, your body will build red muscle. If you work it anaerobically, it will tend to build white muscle.
Is someone who has a lot of fast twitch muscles be stronger than someone who has slow twitch muscles. Depends on how you define strength. If you were unconcious in a building which was about to explode, who would you rather have carry you out ? A body builder with 40 inch biceps or the lean Navy SEAL who trained by running with a 100 lb rucksack for 10 miles ? You make the call.
As for will you lose mass if you lift for endurance, some do, some don't. Some people alternate without losing bulk.
