Full spectrum lighting bulbs & lamps requirements?
I am looking to buy some full spectrum lighting for my home. I do own a parrot (conure) and I have read how the can help. Also, after having some lab work done a few weeks ago I know that I have a bad vitamin D deficiency. I am currently taking supplements for this. My question is: Do I need to buy just a full spectrum bulb and use it in a standard household lamp? Do I need to buy the full spectrum lamp as well? Any advice would greatly be appreciated!
How can I tell if it working correctly?
Most full spectrum bulbs will work fine in a regular lamp. However, if the lamp has a glass cover, it will probably absorb the shorter wavelengths of UV.
Unfortunately, the "full spectrum" label doesn't really mean anything in particular. It's used to describe at least three very different things.
1) Tinted regular incandescent bulbs (usually with neodymium). Unless you like the color, there is no advantage to these.
2) Fluorescent bulbs that cover the visible spectrum more completely than most. This is measured as the Color Rendering Index. High CRI bulbs don't necessarily emit a significant amount of UV, but they're good for art and may help your mood.
3) Bulbs which have a significant UV component - which may or may not have a high CRI.
#3 is the type you want. However, there are no standards at all for "full spectrum" - some bulbs called that emit no UV to speak of, while others emit far more than you want. I suggest one designed for birds, such as http://www.everythingbirdie.com/zoomedavcofl.html, rather than one designed for reptiles.
UV comes in three wide bands, A, B, and C. Birds can see UV-A, so it's nice if they have some in their lighting. It's also the UV that's most common in sunlight. UV-B is what helps you produce vitamin D3. It's also more damaging to your skin and eyes than UV-A. UV-C is extremely damaging and is used in germicidal lights; you don't want it for lighting.
