How to minimize inductance in a spark gap? Assume a spark gap must be used, capacitor bank discharge.?
This is for an electromagnetic can crusher, I have more than enough energy (2000+ joules), but since im using electrolytic capacitors I have a lot of inductance. I cant do much about the inductance in the capacitors, but I can minimize the inductance in the spark gap hopefully. I dont have the financial means to get SCRs that can handle this kind of discharge unfortunately, so Im stuck with a spark gap (or any other cheap ideas you can come up with)
You may be able to buy low inductance caps of the same specs if that'll help, but you'd need to check some of the major suppliers, companies like Farnell or RS (Radio Spares, not radioshack).
I'm not familiar with the circuit, but
what about a large contactor instead of SCR's?
A surplus store or eBay may have something suitable at a reasonable price.
Have you considered a secondary coil to absorb the back EMF from the primary coil, to act as a dampener or secondary crusher?
It may make the operation more efficient if you're storing that energy for a millisecond or two and then re-using it on a second 'crush'.
It would still mean some expense in wiring as well.
You could work out the resonant frequency (from 1/2.Pi.sqrtLC) to get the 'ringing' frequency to match the mechanical action.
Maybe an armature set up... oops, just re-designing your can crusher now...
or put some more thought to it, sell the idea and pay for the SCR's
