Silver Magnetic
Will silver plate pass the magnet test?
I'm trying to figure out if the silver I have is sterling or just silver plated. I read that precious metals are not magnetic but wonder if silver plate would disguise as sterling with the magnet test. All three items I tested are not magnetic and I'm hoping they're sterling. Is there any way to know for sure?
I looked for marking and all I find are 3 crowns in a pyramid design. Searched sterling hallmarks online and found nothing.
A magnet will not answer your question, as the base metal for the plating would most likely not be ferrous. So it doesn't matter whether the plate is solid silver or simply silver plated; it is unlikely that the magnet will stick. One thing you can be sure of, though. If the magnet DOES stick to the plate, the plate is certainly not silver.
If you can find a convenient way to measure the volume of the plate, you could calculate its density, which would get you a lot closer to answering your question
BTW, the three crowns is a good sign. While it is not definitive, most manufacturers of plated ware would not put a mark like that on their ware.
