Does anyone know about a natural tranquilizer or relaxers to calm down a cat?
My cat is really wild and hyper and she won't sit still long enough for us to brush her out (she has really long hair and sheds) and when we try she attacks.
I had a rescued 15 yr old cat who had lived outside day and night for all of her life and she was not used to being handled by a human. She was affectionate and sweet with me and I could not ever brush or comb her. She went to a groomer about every month to six weeks for a combout and bath. And she got quite used to that though I think they used a muzzle on her the first few times. So that is an option to get your cat started on accepting the grooming procedure.
You can start with just brushing her with a very soft brush. It won't do much to remove hair and she will get used to your "groominng" her and probably come to like it. I have what I think is a dog brush - very soft on one side and firmer for removing hair on the other. Then I have a comb whose teeth swivel and you can comb with that. It doesn't pull as much as a straight comb. So start with something like that. It will take time and patience and it may be six months before you can do a really good job of removing excess hair from her body.
Feliway is a good product and useful for relieving tensions AMONG cats. Not for calming an individual cat. A diffuser is $40 or $50 and isn't going to help you groom the cat.
The flower essences are much less expensive ($18 for a bottle that will last you six months). You can start with Rescue Remedy which you can get at a health foods store. You do NOT put RR in a cat's drinking water. That will do nothing. You shake the bottle well and put three or four drops on the fur between the cat's ears. Do that 15 minutes before you start your "grooming" and remember you are starting with just a soft brush at first.
Cats do not like to be approached with INTENTION on the part of their owners - in giving medication or what you feel is necessary for her grooming. So you need to be relaxed in your approach to her and have great patience in getting her to accept the grooming process. It should be a warm, loving and pleasurable experience for both of you.
