Magnet Needle
When you create a magnetic compass, the magnet points along the north/south line, but which side is north?
I'm having trouble understanding this concept. In an experiment, I know that the magnetic needle ends up pointing along the north/south line, but how can you determine which direction is north and which is south?
If you really don't know which direction is north, or south, try getting up in the morning and see where the sun rises in the morning. That would be east. When you face east, north will be on your left side.
Now as to which end of the magnet is pointing north. I assume you are living in the northern hemisphere. Remember that like poles repel and unlike poles attract. So it will be the south pole of your magnet pointing to the north magnetic pole.
