what does high liver and kidney functions mean?
my mum has been signed off work now for 9 weeks as doc refuses to put her back to work until they know whats wrong with her. she is 55 and works as home help. She was always feeling tired, being sick or suffering with urine infections. Docs have taken blood test and said that she has high kidney and liver functions. We dont know what this means though and cannot seem to get sense from doc, but i'm getting worried. anyone know what could be wrong?
The doctor does three types of blood tests
to check to see how the liver is doing:
(1) the liver enzymes show if there is damage
to the liver cells
(2) the liver functions tests show how the cells
of the liver are functioning to keep the body
healthy
(3) viral testing to see if the patient has
contacted a virus.
The doctor does testing also to see how
the kidneys are functioning.
The kidney filters the blood and removes
a by product that develops when we use
our muscles... it is known as creatinine.
If the kidneys are having a problem, they
cannot remove this efficiently. Therefore
it stays in the blood and show a higher level.
Having a kidney infection may increase these
levels on her blood work.
Some of the liver tests can also be elevated
when someone has urine infections.
The doctor is right in keeping her off work
so she can rest until her body can heal from
this and he is sure of what is going on.
Your mother could see specialist regarding
this. A gastroenterologist would check the
liver and a urologist would check the kidneys.
She could ask to be referred to them.
Without her tests results and without knowing
her past medical history...it is almost impossible
to say whether this is an organ related disease
or not. Wish I could be of more help to you.
