Leucine Form
Leucine Form

Proteins and Amino Acids Questions?
1. How many dif. pentapeptides can be formed using 5 dif. amino acids?
2. What types of interactions can occur btwn. the side chains of the following amino acids that would help maintain the tert structure of a protein?
- cysteine, cysteine
- glutamine, serine
- glutamic acid, lycine
- proline, leucine
3. When glutamine substitutes for a single glutamic acid in normal hemoglobin, the hemoglobin is non-lethal. Why?
1.
I get confused by the question.
If you have only 5 amino acids to chose from and can use them any number of time you want, then 5^5 = 3125
If you use all 20 amino acids, but can use each only once, then it's 20!/15! = 1860480
2.
cysteine, cysteine: disulfide bridge (Cys-S-S-Cys)
glutamine, serine: amide+alcohol -> ester (Gln-CO-O-Ser)
glutamic acid, lycine: acid+amine -> amide (Glu-CO-NH-Lyc)
proline, leucine: nothing...
3.
If you check the link, you may find the important role of glutamine. It is one of the most prevalent compounds that enable the assimilation of nitrogen in our body. I am not sure whether this answers your question though...
