Dog allergies are horrible. Please help!!!?
I have a 4 year old beagle and all throughout his life, he has struggled with allergies. I don't have the money to have him tested for what he is allergic to and he has been on 2 pregnisone pills a day and 4 allergy pills a day which don't do anything. He has also been on California Natural, Natural Balance, Kirkland, and lately a Hypoallergenic vet prescribed food called z/d or z/z. Nothing works and it kills me to have see him suffer when i'm trying so hard to help him. He gets weekly baths and is always on a flea control which i have also changed hoping to help. I have tried several types of bath shampoos too.
I don't know what else to do. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone have idea's? Please help me! Please Help us!
Honestly the allergy test is going to be cheaper in the long run.
Without it for food testing you're basically going to put the dog on z/d for two months, then pick a high quality food, transition to it, if itching starts you need to put the dog back on the z/d, and start again. Figuring out what your dog is allergic to can be a long process, especially if you find in the end your dog is allergic to something common in many foods (for example my dog is allergic to chicken and white potatoes both of which are found in many foods).
Many times transitioning to a high quality food lacking in grains, corn, and other low quality products will work but if that doesn't it loops right back to testing being your better options.
If the z/d is not stopping the signs of allergies then I would be looking into issues that are not food related. Weekly baths could be causing itching and signs of allergies, and as spring is here some plants could be causing allergies.
Really the testing is going to save you a lot of time, money, and grief.
