Is it possible to survive getting shot through the temple?
Point blank range, like Russian roulette style. I only recently learned about the brain stem, before then I always thought anything that touched your brain caused insta-kill. The brain stem contradicted everything I believed in, since I read about a man who got punched by a professional boxer in the temple area, and never lived to tell the tale. So, is it possible?
So... it wouldn't be instant?
It is true that the medulla is the structure that must remain intact in order for you to live and thus you might simply only be braindead (oh well) but there is a chance that the intracranial pressure (ICP) would increase in response to this and cause the medulla to die as well due to ischemia caused by the pressure...
in addition, that area is getting dangerously close to the diencephalon, where there are structures such as the pituitary and hypothalamus that are responsible for regulating some important hormones which keep you alive....so it doesn't look good either way in my opinion
