Why we cant make essential fatty acids?
Which enzyme is missing in the process of FA making? I need this for my finals. Thanks!!
So we can say we dont have appropriate desaturases?
I am particulary interested in arahidonic acid. It is derived from linoleate but it cant be made with FA synthase. Whats the deal here?
It depends on the fatty acid, but generally it's a type of elongase or desaturase. Elongases extend the fatty acid chain and desaturases form double bonds.
Edit:
Fatty acid synthase can only make palmitate. The exact mechanism behind this is unclear, but it's most likely because the enzyme holds on to the growing fatty acid side chain fairly tight until it reaches a length of 16 carbons and it loses its grip. In addition it may not be able to catalyze any further reactions once the chain reaches 16 carbon atoms.
