Electromagnetism question about energy, volume, breakdown field strength?
A typical car battery store approximately 4 X 10^6 J. If parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates is to store this amount of energy, what volume must it have; You may assume that the breakdown field strength in air is 3X10^6 V/m.
Please write the formula and steps if possible. Will help to understand it.

The energy density (energy per unit volume) stored in the E-field between the plates of a capacitor (actually its true for any E-field) is;
u = (1/2)e(o)E^2
So the energy in volume "V" is;
U = (1/2)e(o)(E^2)V
and the mininum volume necessary to hold the given amt. of energy without dielectric breakdown is then;
V = 2U/e(o)E^2
= (2)(4x10^6)/(8.85x10^-12)(9x10^12)
= 100,000 m^3
That's a "big" capacitor. The size would be considerably smaller if a dielectric material was placed between the plates, rather then air.
