How common is ammonia added to beef?
I read an article in my local newspaper about major beef producers adding anhydrous ammonia to beef to kill pathogens. I started getting sick from eating beef in July, even a small amount, symptoms of asthma within 20 minutes, dizziness, and feeling like my food wasn't digesting. I stopped eating beef and did a detox and got better. Decided to try a small amount of beef a month later and the wheezing/asthma came back. I have eaten some local-farm raised and butchered beef and was OK with it.
ckngbbl: I was getting sick from eating beef 6 months before I read the article in the paper. I had no reason to believe that it would make me sick until I had those symptoms. I thought at the time it might be steroids or antibiotics fed to the cows. I have also heard that one large chain dyes their beef, heard that one from a woman who worked there previously.
from what I have read, and I did find a couple of articles concerning this, it looks like it is used in fine textrued ground beef only. That is certain hot dogs, copmmercial taco meat, that kind of thing. There would be no reason to add it to whole chunks of beef as the reason it is used is to destroy e coli which is very prevelant in ground beef products. Not good in any case but apparently in acceptble amounts and the manufacturer who is using it so far is BPI, who ever that is

According to the Wiki article, it has been known since 1894 that anhydrous ammonia killed bacteria.
I suspect that since you read the article, you simply assumed all beef now is being treated this way and your body reacted when you did eat beef.
I am the same in that if someone says, "hey taste this. Does it taste funny to you?" I don't have to taste it because yes, now it DOES taste funny to me, even if it actually does not.
