A powder for preparation of an oral rehydration liquid contains 71.7% glucose, 12.5% sodium chloride, 10.4% sodium citrate and 5.8% potassium chloride. What weight of this powder (to the nearest 0.1g) should be used to prepare 5l of a solution containing 1.85%w/v of glucose and proportional amounts of the other constituents?
1.85% w/v of glucose means that there are 1.85g of glucose in 100ml of the solution.
So there needs to be 50*1.85 = 92.5g of glucose in 5l of the solution.
Now, how much powder do you need to give you 92.5g of glucose?
Let's call the weight of powder we need, p.
71.7% of p is glucose.
So p * 71.7/100 = 92.5
p = 92.5 * 100 / 71.7
p = 129.0g (to nearest 0.1g)
