Cherries and Their Health Benefits

Cherries and their health benefits are many, one being nutritious, are very delicious. There are other health benefits such as minerals, compounds, and vitamins that participate in preventing some diseases. Some studies have proven that many of the compounds help to prevent some cancers.

The antioxidants that are found in cherries help to clean up the free radicals. What are free radicals you ask? Free radicals are molecules that are very unstable which can cause harm to our cells while some circulating molecules attack some healthy cells. A quick process of aging is usually caused by the damage free radicals have caused.

Cherries are a good source of vitamins but they have a low quantity of vitamins A and C; the health benefits of strawberries provide us with more of the vitamins. It is the combination of other compounds and the antioxidants that give cherries so many health benefits. Beside the two vitamins listed, cherries also include ellagic acid, anthocyanins, melatonin, bioflavonoids and perillyl. The compounds and nutrients found in cherries not only furnish us the ability to fight cancer but help to prevent heart disease, gout, and headache and arthritis pain relief. Cherries also provide us with melatonin and sometimes improve our mental functions.

Cherries are quite low in calories and fat, but contain high percentages of water. Increasing the intake of water helps boost our energy level and increases the metabolism. Many have discovered that consuming fruits that have contain high levels of water such as cherries helps in losing weight. These delicious little berries have a high level of potassium and are low in sodium. Consuming a diet that has a low sodium level will help to lose water weight.

Cherries come in two different types, sweet and tart or sour. Bing cherries are probably the most popular type of sweet cherry and are found fresh and seasonal in the grocery stores. The tart or sour cherries are usually canned and used in baking pies; they are also found dried in fruit snacks and as juice. The other vitamins and minerals found in cherries are vitamin B-comples and C, and potassium. I believe most of us enjoy eating fresh sweet cherries right from the produce section of our grocery stores.

Both types of cherries contain pigments called antioxicants and anthocyanins that give the fruit that dark red coloring. Tart cherries are one of the fruits that contain the largest amounts of antioxidants. The tart juices and dried tarts contain more antioxidants than blueberries. The anthocyanins that are in tart cherries have a high level of anti-inflammatory traits that are helpful in relieving pain.

It has been found there are high levels of melatonin in tart cherries. This antioxidant helps to slow down the progression of aging as well as regulating sleep. By consuming Montmorency tart cherries could broaden the melatonin levels that are already in our bodies.

Cherries, sweet or tart, canned or fresh, contain many health benefits. It is possible to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics by consuming cherries. Cherries also help to lower the LDL level of cholestrol to help prevent strokes.
