How to care for a 5-week old kitten?
I'm picking out a kitten today, but they're only five weeks old or so. If I take one home, how should I care for it? Will it need formula and nutrient-enriched kitten food? Or will hard food be sufficient? What else do I need to know or do to make the kitten's transition less scary? Please help!

The kitten is eight weeks old! Sorry for the confusion, I was skeptical too!
you do NOT want to take home a five week old kitten. They are way too young and social and physically immature. They need to be with their mother and siblings to learn manners and other behaviours that will make the kitty bearable to live with. Leave it with its mother till it is at least 12 weeks, 8 weeks is really pushing it..
If you have to take it this young, be aware it might not be eating solid food, and you will have to nurse it every couple of hours, and stimulate it to urinate and deficate with a tissue or damp cloth. (yes, rub it's butt to make it go) You'll have to show it how to use litter as it gets older, and find a way to train it not to bite you too hard (cause that is something it's siblings will show it) You need to be careful not to give in to it's every whim, or you'll end up with a very spoiled adult cat, and people rarely like that. provide the kitty a teddy bear or some other plush item to cuddle into. Consider taking two kittens, as they will help each other with the training and socialization, and will help each other build confidence and make better cats. Kittens really should always be in pairs. Only kittens get bored quickly and often "get in to trouble' by getting into things you really really don't want them to get into, like the nicknacks in your house - oh so fun to watch those fall to the floor.
