which foods shall a colostamy patient eat and avoid ,any additional advice?
This patient has their colon removed removed and has her large intestine intact, she would like to reduce involuntary gas and birpage she digests slow (all day for three ribs)the odor is bothersome to her too.The bags have leaked on more than one occasion which may be unnecesssarywith new caps?
She needs to cut down on 'gassy' foods such as onions, broccoli, beans, etc. But if her favorite foods cause gas she could take 'Beano'. It helps the body cut down on the formation of gas.
Avoid nuts and popcorn as these items can inflame the stoma. If it takes all day for ribs to digest then she has most of her large intestine intact. She needs to drink more water. Cut down on liquids that contain caffeine
Do NOT under any circumstances poke a hole in the bag. Not only does it allow some of the most gaggingly foul odors to escape, it can weaken the bag and cause tearing. That is the absolute Last thing you want to happen in public (or at home for that matter)!
Attend a cancer support group. These marvelous people have all sorts of fantastic ways to assist in coping with colostomy bag issues. Good Luck and I Hope This Helps.
