How does the body maintain balance?
I've heard it has something to do with fluids in the inner ear? Is this true? can someone go into more detail please?
You're right.
The inner ear has vestibular apparatus. The movement of the head causes the fluid (endolymph) to move around in the semicircular canals, saccule and utricle. These three organs have special hair cells that work in a specific way for specific motions (I don't remember the particular details). The information goes up your vestibular-cochlear nerve to the brainstem, where it supplie the vestibular nucleus.
I won't go into specifics, but there is a link to your eye muscles, neck muscles and general body muscles (vestibulo- occular, bulbar, spinal). The latter 2 control your neck and body in reflex actions to maintain balance when your head turns. The vestibulo-occular causes a reflex in which your eyes turn in the opposite direction to your head.
