Question on x and y axis!?
I am doing a lab on reaction rates. In the lab, we performed several different mixtures with the same reactants - just at different concentrations - to show that a higher concentration = a higher reaction rate. I now need to make a graph relating concentration vs. elapsed time. I know time always goes on the x axis, but here to me it makes more sense to put it on the y axis, because you would say "at 1.0 molarity, it took 45 seconds," rather than "at 45 seconds, it was 1.0 molarity." So isn't the concentration therefore the independent variable, x?
You must put concentration on the x-axis, because it it the independent variable. On the y-axis you must put 1/time elapsed. That will give you the rate, and then you will get a line starting at the origin, and going upwards with a positive gradient.
