Alto Labs

Is it difficult to learn the Double Bass?
this guy right here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_bass
I play the clarinet for marching band and alto clarinet for concert band but I want to join orchestra next year too. There are only four clarinet spots and no alto clarinet spots in orchestra, and I want a surefire way to be in orchestra. So my friend and I told our band director we want to start the bass. I took Piano Lab in school last year so I'm pretty familiar with the bass clef. Otherwise, is it difficult to learn?
BTW, I don't want copy pasta from the wiki article. Actual experiences are more welcomed. Thank you

i posted the link for exactly this reason.
not a double bass pedal for drum set.
a string double bass.
contrabass.
whatever you want to call it.
It is somewhat more difficult than many other instruments, yes. This is largely due to its immense size (no pun intended), and also to the fact that you have to develop a good ear...though in some ways that makes it similar to singing.
I would suggest renting a contrabass from a local music store (preferably one that specializes in stringed instruments). Try it out for a couple months and see how it goes, then make a decision.
